2013 Wimbledon Contest

THE RULES

1. Pick quarterfinalists, semifinalists, finalists, and champions for both ATP and WTA draws. You will receive 7.5 points for each correct quarterfinalist, 5 points for each correct semifinalist and finalist, and 20 points for each correct champion.

2. SUBSTITUTE PICK: Pick a player from each draw to replace one of your quarterfinalists. If this player makes the quarters, they will take the place of whomever you picked in that section of the draw

3. BIGGEST LOSER: pick the highest seed that will lose in the earliest round from each draw. The player must be a top-16 seed. You get 5 points if your seed is the highest to lose and 2 points if your seed falls in the same round as the highest seed to lose.

BONUS PICKS

1. FORGET FRED PERRY, WE'RE HAUNTED BY VIRGINIA WADE: Which round will the last British woman make before she loses? Pick the correct choice and you will get 2 bonus points for the round and 2 bonus points for the correct player.

EXTRAS

***Unseeded quarterfinalists are worth an extra half point for every seed they take out en route.

***WTF bonus: if you have a pick that makes it to the quarterfinals that no one else made (not even as a substitute pick), you'll gain an extra 5 points for it.  If there are only two contestants, then the WTF bonus is not in effect.

Re: 2013 Wimbledon Contest

Thanks, Rafa, for ruining our picks.  I knew I should have picked Federer, but head went over heart.

funches, do you think we'll get a "Rafa's withdrawing from the rest of the year" announcement in the next week or two?

Re: 2013 Wimbledon Contest

I don't think Nadal will sit out the hardcourt season this time, but my credibility isn't too high. Last year you thought he would call it a year and I posted some blather about how much the indoor season meant to him. Yeah, right.

I don't think this result was nearly as surprising as last year's. For one, Darcis has been around a lot longer than Rosol and has had a decent career despite being awful this year. I'd never heard of Rosol, and he played lights out tennis to beat Nadal. Darcis was solid (nothing more) and kept his nerve in the tiebreaks, but the way Nadal was serving, moving and hitting his backhand, he would have lost to a whole bunch of average players today.

I expect Darcis will lose to Kubot in the second round. Everyone will say he couldn't come off the high of beating Nadal, just like they said about Rosol last year when he lost to Kohlschreiber. They were wrong then --Kohlshreiber is simply a better grass court player than Rosol--and they would be wrong this time--Kubot served for the quarterfinals at Wimbledon against Lopex two years ago. Darcis had two ATP tour wins for the year before today, and one of them was in a Davis Cup dead rubber.

Re: 2013 Wimbledon Contest

At this point, I think I may be resigned to Federer never winning another slam.  I would have liked him to tie the Evert and Navratliova level, just to show it could be done on the men's side.

I'm both surprised that Lisicki took out Serena and not surprised.  She has the game to do it on grass, it was just a question of whether her mind would hold up.  I like Na Li to the final on the top of the women's draw with Kvitova on the bottom, though something like Bartoli making it is not out of the realm of possibility.

Re: 2013 Wimbledon Contest

All eight players who reach the quarterfinals will have a legit shot to win the tournament, and I doubt that's ever been true for any grand slam ever.

My ranking of the eight in order of likelihood:

1) Lisicki --Thought she had an excellent chance to win it two years ago, and she came out impossibly tight against Sharapova.

2)  Bartoli--She's so much better on grass than any other surface, but this is a blind pick. Haven't seen a point of her matches at Wimbledon this year. Her best on grass is outstanding.

3) Kvitova--She has the most game on grass of anyone left, but she's just not playing well enough to make me confident in her chances.

4) Li --see Kvitova. Except I don't think Li is as confident on grass as Kvitova.

5) Flipkens--She may have the best all-around game on grass of anyone left, but pedigree matters.

6) Stephens --that semifinal run in Australia gave her the belief she can do it against the caliber of players she will face. But she's not playing as well as she's capable, and that could cost her.

7) Kanepi--has the power to win Wimbledon, but she'll have to take that hand off her throat.

8) Radwanska/Pironkova --Pironkova has the flat strokes to do damage on grass, but not the pedigree or self-belief. I'd love to see Radwanska win it because she's been so consistent the last two years, but any in-form power player will beat her. Hard to believe, even with this draw, that she can avoid that happening three more times.

EDIT: With Pironkova out, I feel even better about all eight quarterfinalists having a shot. I saw Radwanska beat Li a few years ago in straight sets at Wimbledon. If she gets a Li, Kanepi path to the final and avoids Kvitova in the final, it's possible for her.

My pick for the final at the moment would be Lisicki over Bartoli. But the chance of that, or any other pick, proving correct at this point is slim.

Re: 2013 Wimbledon Contest

I would have gotten all four women's quarterfinals right if I had predicted them, but I knew the Radwanska-Li and Flipkens-Kvitova matches were toss-ups.

I was really impressed with Flikpens in her fourth round win againt Pennetta. Most analysts looked at Pennetta's ranking and lack of previous success on grass and dismissed the result. I used my eyes,  watched one teriffic point after another in one of the best sets of the tournament (first set) and realized Flipkens had a lot of game on grass.

Today was a triumph for tennis players over ball-strikers. The four players who won all played smarter and had more variety than their opponents. Bartoli has to be thrilled to face Flipkens instead of Kvitova, who can overpower her.

Re: 2013 Wimbledon Contest

I have to admit that I'm astonished that Flikpens beat Kvitova.  I watched the first set and thought it was going to be a wipeout for Kvitova.  But when you only make 5 unforced errors in the entire match and are willing to come forward, I guess you've got serious game.  How astonishing would it be if she was the first Belgian woman to win Wimbledon?

I didn't think Maid Marion played that well against Stephens in the second set.  She won, but Stephens was awful on her serve.  I forgot how fun it is to watch Bartoli play.  All her quirks are mesmerizing.  It's also nice to see Mauresmo again, even if it is in the coaching box.

The winner of Radwanska v. Lisicki will be favorite in the final, but I have to admit that I'm rooting for either of Flikpen or Bartoli.  Either way, it'll be a very interesting matchup to watch, at least, I hope so.

Re: 2013 Wimbledon Contest

If Radwanska makes the final, I think she'd really struggle against Bartoli, who would repeatedly hit service return winners. I agree she did not play very well against Stephens, though.

It would be unprecedented in my lifetime for someone with the lack of career credentials like Flipkens to win a slam, but then again, the lack of pedigree overall in the semifinals is unprecedented. This is the year to do it.

I was not surprised Verdasco took Murray to five sets. Again, like the Flipkens-Pennetta match, I was mesmerized by Verdasco's play againt Gulbis in the third  round. It was the best solo performance anyone has played at Wimbledon this year. Gulbis was mediocre, but it wouldn't have mattered. Verdasco was large and in charge on his serve, his return, his forehand and his backhand. I have a feeling the loss today will be a career crusher for him, though. He could taste his first slam final but wasn't quite good enough to get past Murray and earn a favorable matchup with Janowicz.
