Wimbledon Contest 2017

Time to don your all-white outfit and get ready for Wimbledon!

1. Pick quarterfinalists, semifinalists, finalists, and champions for both ATP and WTA draws. You will receive 7.5 points for each correct quarterfinalist, 5 points for each correct semifinalist and finalist, and 20 points for each correct champion.  All champion picks are worth full points.

2. SUBSTITUTE PICK: Pick a player from each draw to replace one of your quarterfinalists. If this player makes the quarters, they will take the place of whomever you picked in that section of the draw

3. BIGGEST LOSER: pick the highest seed that will lose in the earliest round from each draw. The player must be a top-16 seed. You get 5 points if your seed is the highest to lose and 2 points if your seed falls in the same round as the highest seed to lose.

***Unseeded quarterfinalists are worth an extra half point for every seed they take out en route.

***WTF bonus: if you have a pick that makes it to the quarterfinals that no one else made (not even as a substitute pick), you'll gain an extra 5 points for it.  If there are only two contestants, then the WTF bonus is not in effect.

Re: Wimbledon Contest 2017

Pliskova appears to be rock solid despite her sorry history at Wimbledon. Other than that, I have no clue what will happen with the women, so might as well go with the one who is unbeatable when she plays well.

Murray over Tsonga
Cilic over Muller
Federer over Raonic
Djokovic over Gasquet (Berdych)

Cilic over Murray
Federer over Djokovic

Federer over Cilic 6-3, 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4

Biggest loser: Thiem

Mattek-Sands over Uytvanck
Pliskova over Vandeweghe
Ostapenko (Keys) over Venus
Kvitova over Halep

Pliskova over Mattek-Sands
Kvitova over Ostapenko

Kvitova over Pliskova 6-4, 7-6

Biggest loser: Svitolina

Re: Wimbledon Contest 2017

Looking at the 32 women left, I have no idea who will win. None of the upsets have been a big surprise event though my picks have been decimated. Even Rybarikova beating Pliskova hardly qualifies as a shock since Rybarikova, a talented underachiever, has won more matches on grass this year than any other player, male or female.

I read Pliskova will be No. 1 in the world unless Halep reaches the semis or Kerber wins the tournament. I don't see how that's true. It seems like Halep would simply have to reach the quarters and Kerber would have to reach the final, defending their points from last year, just as Pliskova did with her second-round loss.

Re: Wimbledon Contest 2017

Now I get it. Halep won Bucharest last year, which was played the same week Wimbledon is ending this year, so 240 points will drop off her ranking. To make up that difference, she has to reach the final at Wimbledon.

Re: Wimbledon Contest 2017

Apologies for the late results.  They were about as close as the finals.  The final standings:

funches: 122.5
Forehand_lob: 90

With 11 correct quarterfinalists, you would have been in the lead in the old days of the contest.  However, you only had 2 semifinalists, so that might have made things tighter in the end.

Congratulations on winning, funches!
