VTR Open: Zeballos d. Nadal

I've maintained that Nadal is the type of player who can't enter a big tournament without any play and win, but this wasn't a big tournament.  It's shocking that he couldn't win a small tournament on clay in his comeback.

funches, you said you were ready to write off Sharapova for losing to Li in the AO semis.  How does this rate?

No, I'll never write off Rafa. He's by far the greatest clay court player who ever lived. After that one hiccup, he's been fine although nowhwere near his top form. Even a subpar Rafa on clay is unbeatable at Roland Garros for anyone but Djokovic, and I do mean the word unbeatable. There's no one else playing right now who could beat him 1 time of out 100 in best of five in Paris.

I think he'll be fine on grass, too. He's always been vulnerable in the early rounds when Wimbledon is still grass, and finally last year a marginal player held his nerve and played big in the big moments to beat him after several others came close but failed in the past. Once the grass turns to dirt, he's awesome at Wimbledon, too.

Hard courts are the question mark. With Rafa's knees and general vulnerability there, I doubt he'll ever win another U.S. Open or Australian Open.
